Learn with us how you can utilize sheep fleece in your outdoor projects to improve and elevate your space - for lining paths, mulching and reducing the needs to trim grass.
We will meet at Dunnet Community Forest and will use the sheep fleeces kindly donated to us by Andrew Bremner and James and John Munro (huge thanks to them!) for our path lining experimental project.
We will trial using sheep wool as lining material for two situations in the Dunnet Forest - on muddy paths that become unwalkable when wet, to benefit from the wool’s moisture retention properties, as it will absorb the water and will keep the paths walkable, and your boots - clean. The other issue that we will address is paths through overgrown areas where we will use the fleece as mulch, to suppress growth of grass, instead of having to regularly trimming it, to maintain the path.
Sheep wool tied around the tree trunks also protects it from being nibbled by rabbits and deer, which can be detrimental for young trees, so we will trial using the wool as protective barrier for the trees as well.
This event is scheduled during regular Dunnet Community Forest volunteering session, and everyone is welcome to attend, without prior booking.
The event is free.
Important! Please bring your gardening gloves with you! Generally, always wear gloves when working with sheep fleece.
